Review of Martin Pearson Concert 21st November 2009

Oh!! What a night. If you didn’t get there you missed yet another of Titirangi’s exceptional Concert Nights.

As has become the norm at the Concert Nights we started with a 20 minute set from a local artist. Clare and Kirsty Roberston opened with a beautifully balanced and delivered set. These two young ladies continue to delight us with their accomplished harp work and this time around they had a surprise or two for us. Their tight vocal harmonies on Cotton Mill Girls to ukelele accompaniment just showed us what a talent they are. They thoroughly deserved the encore they got. Martin commented he was perfectly happy to listen to them all night and not play.

So, how to describe Martin Pearson? "A complete performer" hardly even begins to do him justice. The audience were left in no doubt as to why he is such a popular act on the Australian folk scene. Opening with a thoroughly sensitive delivery of the poignant trad song Bold Carter he had us captivated from the first line and never let us go. Thereafter he took his cue from the audience to start his songs. It was as if he could judge when our ribs, aching from laughter, needed a rest. Memorable? It sure was, especially seeing the audience willingly participate as his Orc Chorus and swaying to the cry of Nazgul Nazgul Nazgul Nazgul Nazgul Nazgul Nazgul. How did he do that? Thank you Martin for one of the best nights at Titirangi. We’ll book you again when you are next over this side of the ditch. Audience.... you have been warned. You'll probably need to book seats.
