It’s over 50 years since Pitt Ramsay discovered finger-style guitar. A good thing too, as it was its self-contained nature that revived his interest in playing. Using a flat-pick only had begun to pall, and so it was with relief, frustration and ultimately gratitude that he found myself attempting to emulate players who used this polyphonic approach.
In the mid 60’s, local performer John Sutherland was a big influence on Pitt. His Sunday night appearances at the Wynyard Tavern were a must for guitarists wanting to soak up a few ideas. Since those days he’s continued to absorb from, and been inspired by, many guitar greats - too many to list here - but the process is of course never-ending, with ups and downs present in equal measure. He’s just grateful that half a century later, he can still be part of it. His guitar pupils and his audiences are equally grateful and an evening with Pitt Ramsay, guitar maestro and singer of fine songs, is one not to miss.
