The Folk Music magazine ‘A Little Bit Off The Top’ had this to say about our guest tonight:-
"Gavin Asher is a fine folk singer who has literally grown up with the Auckland Folk Scene. His vibrant and enthusiastic performances have made him 1 of New Zealand's best known folk entertainers".
When that was written, in the 1980s, Gavin was already a well established & much loved performer on the Auckland Folk Music scene. He first arrived on that scene at Titirangi in 1966 at the tender age of 13, pretty much right at the very beginning of the club's life too. He's been a regular at the club ever since, has been on the committee & is a life member.
He plays & accompanies himself with 6 & 12 string guitars, & also sings unaccompanied; he has an astonishing number of traditional and contemporary songs which he delivers with a strong voice and an energetic expressive style. Recently he's been branching out into songwriting & we'll also get to hear some of the fruits of that new venture tonight.
An informal ‘Singaround’ - ‘Open Mic’ without a Mic - A smaller group of people meet to share their songs and music.
An evening of songs & music dedicated to the pleasures of singing songs about Ethanol, in all its rich variety.
Here is your opportunity to enjoy the songs and music of the Festival's ‘Home Brew and Drinking Songs’ session in the more sober and relaxed atmosphere of the Titirangi Beach Hall.
Just who was John Barleycorn anyway? Who was Jones? Come and find out.
One of our famed theme nights where the music and entertainment will be provided by our wonderfully talented floor singers and musicians, many of whom are seasoned performers on the folk circuit.
